Instructions:

1. Prepare the Oven and Baking Pan:

- Grease and flour a 9 x 13-inch (23 x 33 cm) baking dish or line it with parchment paper.
2. Cook the Apples and Dates:
- In a medium saucepan, combine the diced apples, chopped dates, and water.
- Bring to a boil over medium heat, then reduce to a simmer, cooking until the apples are soft and the dates have mostly dissolved (about 10 minutes).
- Remove from heat and stir in the baking soda. Set aside to cool slightly.
