6. Prepare the Mashed Potatoes:
- While the onions and apples are cooking, place the chopped potatoes in a large pot of salted water.
- Bring to a boil and cook until the potatoes are tender and easily pierced with a fork (about 15-20 minutes).
- Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.
- Add the heavy whipping cream and butter (if using), then mash until smooth. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
