Golden syrup dumplings

Golden syrup dumplings are a delightful and comforting dessert that originated in Australia. These warm, fluffy dumplings are cooked in a luscious, sweet syrup and are both quick and easy to prepare. This recipe uses accessible ingredients and can be a perfect treat for any special occasion or simply as a dessert to satisfy your sweet tooth.

Ingredients:

1 cup self-raising flour
150g
2 tbsp butter
30g
1/2 cup maple syrup
120g
1/3 cup milk (1% fat)
80g
1 cup brown sugar
230g
2 tbsp lemon juice
10g

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Dough:
- In a large bowl, sift 1 cup of self-raising flour.
- Add 2 tablespoons of butter to the flour. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs.
2. Combine Wet Ingredients:
- In a separate small bowl or measuring cup, measure 1/3 cup (80g) of 1% fat milk.
- Gradually add the milk to the flour and butter mixture. Stir well to form a soft dough. If necessary, use your hands to bring the dough together.
3. Make the Syrup:
- In a large saucepan, combine 1/2 cup (120g) of maple syrup, 1 cup (230g) of brown sugar, and 2 tablespoons (10g) of lemon juice.
- Add 1 1/2 cups (375ml) of water to the saucepan. Stir to dissolve the sugar and combine the ingredients thoroughly.
4. Heat the Syrup:
- Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the syrup mixture to a gentle boil, stirring occasionally.
5. Form the Dumplings:
- While the syrup is heating, take small portions of the dough and roll them into walnut-sized balls (about 1 inch in diameter).
- You should get around 10-12 dumplings from the dough.
6. Cook the Dumplings:
- Once the syrup is boiling, gently place the dumplings into the syrup using a spoon.
- Reduce the heat to low and cover the saucepan with a lid.
- Allow the dumplings to simmer for about 15-20 minutes, or until they are puffed up and cooked through. You can test one by inserting a toothpick into the center; it should come out clean.
7. Serve:
- Carefully remove the dumplings from the saucepan using a slotted spoon and place them into serving bowls.
- Pour the warm syrup over the dumplings.
- Serve immediately.

Tips:

- 1: Ensure that the butter is cold and cut into small cubes before incorporating it into the flour for a crumbly texture.

- 2: For a richer flavor, try using full-fat milk instead of 1% fat milk.

- 3: If you don’t have brown sugar, you can substitute with an equal amount of white sugar, although the flavor may differ slightly.

- 4: Serve the dumplings warm and drizzle with extra syrup or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an indulgent treat.

- 5: Make sure the syrup is simmering gently and not boiling rapidly to ensure the dumplings cook evenly and stay tender.

Golden syrup dumplings are a simple yet indulgent dessert that will warm your heart and delight your taste buds. With their fluffy texture and rich syrup, they make for a perfect ending to any meal. Whether serving them at a dinner party or enjoying them as a family treat, these dumplings are sure to be a crowd-pleaser.
